Chase Holleman ’16, when UNCG Magazine last covered him, was Program Director in GCSTOP (Guilford County Solution To The Opioid Problem), located in the UNCG Department of Social Work.
In the community’s fight against overdose fatality, he was on the front line. GCSTOP functions as a clinical training site for social work students from UNCG and NC A&T, in addition to distributing thousands of life-saving naloxone kits every year. In the last year, the kits were used to save over 1,200 lives. It has also established an additional community center, Kaitlyn’s House, in High Point and has gone into jails to support people who have been incarcerated. It also opened a partnership with Cone Health’s Congregational Nursing Program to further its community engagement.
In October 2021, Chase accepted a position at the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), within the federal Health and Human Services Department, where he is now a public Health Advisor and the Harm Reduction Lead. This is the first time that harm reduction has been funded as part of the president’s mental health and substance strategy, providing new resources for Chase to help on a larger scale.
