Spartans celebrate America 250

Across the Triad, UNCG alumni are helping their communities mark America’s semiquincentennial – its 250^th anniversary – through the America 250 – Guilford County committee. 

Committee member James Watterson ’91, chief operating officer at the Greensboro Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, says the committee wants to honor both local and national history. “Our goal is to foster an inclusive, community-wide celebration where everyone can take pride in Guilford County’s role in shaping our nation’s story.”  

Mary-Helen Kolousek ’23 heads up civic engagement efforts for the committee. “Engaging with history helps citizens understand how society became what it is today,” she says. “It reminds us that we do not live in isolation but benefit from the sacrifices and efforts of those who came before us.” Kolousek is student engagement manager for Action Greensboro.  

Local institutions such as museums and community organizations have a big role to play.   

Tamara Vaughan ’17 MA is a committee member and marketing liaison for America 250 – Guilford County. She’s also communications coordinator at the High Point Museum.   

“There are so many different events going on throughout the year that everyone will be able to find something that interests them. These events give us a chance to explore how our local community is connected to the greater American story, to celebrate the last 250 years, and to reflect on the people and events that have shaped our nation,” says Vaughan.   

The Greensboro History Museum is rolling out semiquincentennial events throughout the year, says Sarah Maske ’19, ’21 MA. In her role as public programs coordinator and education assistant, Maske brings events to the community. 

And, from historic Revolutionary War sites to the downtown statue of General Greene created by James Barnhill ’82 MFA, there is a lot to celebrate in Guilford County.   

“The America 250 Guilford County committee is focused on helping our community make history while honoring the Revolutionary history that happened right here at home,” explains Watterson.
